A steering lock fault can leave your vehicle completely undriveable. When the electronic steering lock fails to release, the steering column remains locked and the engine will not start, even if your key is recognised by the immobiliser. This is a common fault on a range of vehicles and requires specialist diagnostic equipment to resolve.
Velokey provides mobile steering lock diagnosis and repair across Bedford, Luton, Milton Keynes, Northampton and Cambridge. We attend your location with the tools needed to identify the fault, reset the system, and repair or replace the ESL/ELV module where required, all without a recovery truck.
We regularly work on steering lock faults affecting BMW particularly the E-series, Mercedes-Benz, Vauxhall Astra and Insignia, and a range of other makes where electronic steering lock modules are fitted as standard.
Whether the fault is a worn motor, a failed module, or a communication error between the steering lock and the ECU, we diagnose accurately and repair correctly first time.

FAQs
Got a question? We're here for you!
What causes a steering lock fault?
The most common cause is a failed ESL/ELV motor or module, often due to wear or an interrupted power supply during a battery replacement or flat battery event. Some vehicles develop this fault more frequently than others.
Can a steering lock fault be fixed without replacing the module?
Sometimes. In some cases the fault can be cleared by resetting the system. In others, module repair or replacement is necessary. We diagnose first and confirm the fix before any parts are ordered.
How long does steering lock repair take?
Most steering lock jobs are completed within 1 to 3 hours on-site.
Which vehicles are most commonly affected?
BMW E-series including E87, E90 and E92, Mercedes-Benz models with ELV systems, and Vauxhall Astra and Insignia are among the most common. However, the fault can occur on many other makes with electronic steering lock systems.
Will I need a new key after steering lock repair?
In most cases no. The steering lock repair is separate from key programming. However, if the fault was caused by an ECU or immobiliser issue, additional key work may be needed and we will advise after diagnosis.
